Dear Friends:
Today in our Gospel story from Luke 9:28b– 36 we hear one of the more famous stories in the Gospels. Jesus takes Peter, John, and James up a mountain. “While he was praying, his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah…” Peter and the others wake up and see what is happening. Peter yells out “Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Peter did not understand what was going on and by making three tents was hoping to keep Elijah and Moses, as well as Jesus, with them. Then from the cloud, a voice came that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” The cloud disappeared and Jesus was alone with the disciples. The three were so stunned they fell silent and did not tell anyone what they saw.
Can you imagine what it would have been like to be there on that day? To actually see Jesus conversing with two major prophets and to hear the Father himself speak from heaven. No wonder they were silent. They must’ve been scared to death. We may never be able to have a Transfiguration such as the one we heard about today. That does not stop Jesus from interacting with us every day of our lives. It may not be in clouds and with two prophets in attendance, but he certainly does speak to us.
Actually, we never know when God will speak to us. It may be something we read in a book, newspaper, or see on TV. We never know if God will choose a person to be a modern-day prophet. If that’s the case, then we should be on the lookout for God’s word and presence among us. I don’t know about you, but I sure don’t want to miss that word.
Peace and All Good!
Deacon Jim
