Dear Friends:

The Gospel from John 18:30 33b – 37 seems rather simple but it is rather complicated. When Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the King of the Jews,” he is actually trying to trap Jesus. If Jesus answers affirmatively, Pilate immediately has grounds to put him to death. Jesus however answers his question with a question. Are you asking me this on your own or have others told you about me?

Notice that Jesus stands up to Pilate. He does not allow Pilate to bully him or to make him say something that is not truthful. Pilate was a very cruel man and was known to kill a person without much thought. Jesus is not afraid of Pilate. As we know, Pilate eventually puts Jesus to death but it was not of his own choosing. The Jewish leadership made that happen.

I think the crux of this Gospel is that Jesus loves us enough to give his own life so that we might live. There is no greater gift anyone can give than his or her own life. Giving one’s life does not always mean that someone has to die. Giving our lives can be devotion to God, to our families, and to those who need us. May God give us the courage we need to give of our own lives.

May God bless you in a special way you this day and all the days to come!

Peace and All Good!
