Jubilee-Francis Facts

Over the last 6 months we have explored St. Francis de Sales’ life.  After his death on December 28, 1622 at the age of 55,  Francis was buried in the Church of the Monastery of the Visitation in Annecy which de Sales co-founded with Saint Jane de Chantal.  Both saints were buried there and venerated at that location until the French Revolution, numerous miracles have been reported at this shrine.

Although Francis was buried in Annecy, the people of Lyons France demanded that they have his remains, so the saint’s heart was kept there until it was moved to Venice during the Revolution.  St. Francis de Sales’ heart is still venerated in Venice Italy today.

Francis was Beatified on January 8th in 1661 by Pope Alexander VII and canonized by the same pope on April 8, 1665.  St. Francis de Sales’ title as a saint is Bishop and Doctor of the Church.  Francis de Sales is known in different parts of the world as the patron saint for different groups such as confessors, deaf people, educators, writers and journalist.  St. Francis’ shrine is in Annecy, Haute-Savoie.
