St. Francis de Sales (SFDS) - Abingdon, Maryland

SFDS > About the Parish > The Church on the Hill

In 1866, an energetic priest organized 200 area Catholics in the building of the church on the hill.  For 98 years, St. Francis de Sales was a mission of another parish.
1964-1991: The Parish
Upon becoming a parish, St. Francis celebrates its centennial anniversary and builds a new worship center to serve its rapidly growing congregation.
In 1992, more than 3,500 parishoners of St. Francis observe the community's quarquicentennial anniversary and open the doors to a new house of worship.
George Washington slept here.  In fact, Washington frequently conducted business or traveled through Abingdon en route to Philadelphia.
